OPPORTUNITIES IN THE UY LAB

LAB AND LOCAL FIELD WORK

Students at Syracuse University can get involved in several projects on and near campus.

For those interested in field work, my graduate student, Ellen Wisner, and I run a field project looking at the effects of urbanization in animal communication. We monitor (e.g., bands birds) several sites throughout Central and Upstate NY. Ellen is currently looking for field assistants to help her with local field work during late spring and early summer of 2009. For details contact Ellen.

For those interested in lab experiments, we have a breeding colony of guppies that we use to run behavioral experiments. Students have developed and ran neat experiments using these fish in the past few years in my lab. Some have worked closely with my graduate student, Jorge Luis Hurtado-Gonzales. For details contact Jorge

Finally, for those interested in molecular work, we have several projects that use molecular genetics to understand the evolutionary history of several avian lineages. Students will be trained in standard molecular genetic techniques (e.g., PCR, DNA extraction, etc.). For details contact Al

For details on the projects, go the our Research website.

Ellen & Megan

Megan Hirshberg, an Honors student, helps Ellen in the field.

My goal is to involve students in all aspects of research. Students are expected to develop their projects. If the results prove to be interesting and robust, students will co-author a manuscript for peer-reviewed publications. In addition, I expect students to be involved in our weekly lab meetings, because exposure to these meetings is an invaluable training tool. Students can work in our lab for research credits.
